Just Thinking.........Again

A devotion from Genesis 22

Sacrifice

Abraham was called to bring his son to Moriah and sacrifice him there.  What would your response be to such a request?  Abraham hadn't always been obedient to what God had called him to do.  As he moves through his life we begin to see that he has grown in his faith to where he does what God tells him.  If Abraham had said, "My God would never make such a request" or "My God wouldn't put me in such an uncomfortable place" then we would not know the rest of the story.  We wouldn't know of the God who provided a sacrifice for Abraham.  We wouldn't know this was the story that will play out a few thousand years later when God will send His son as a sacrifice on the same mount.  If Abraham had refused we would only know of God who called him to sacrifice his son.  He would have missed out on the deeper meaning.

When we presume to know God and how he thinks we misrepresent Him.  All the time we hear, "God would never do that" or "I don't believe in that God".  We have created our own God who just wants us to be comfortable, rich and fed.  What we end up being is lazy, overweight and a poor steward of money.  We must stop creating our own comfortable God who never pushes us out of our place to show Himself to us.  If we aren't obedient to go to the place of sacrifice when He calls us, we can never come to a deeper understanding of Him.  When Abraham walked up the mountain, neither he nor Isaac questioned what was happening.  They knew the promise God had made them.  If Isaac was to die, God had created a problem for himself.  They were to be fathers of a great nation.  How could this be if Isaac, his only son, was to be sacrificed?  They knew God's promises were sure.

How many times have we been put in that uncomfortable place where we are tested in our walk with the Lord?  We spend our time crying out to God, wondering how we ended up here and what is going on.  We wonder how our God could do this to us.  How could Abraham's God do that to Him?  God did this to Abraham and he does it to us to bring us to a deeper understanding of who He is.  He does these things to purify his image and purge our thoughts of all the coloring book understanding of our Great and Awesome God.

Don't waste the sacrifice that you're making.  Don't waste the despair, pain and hurt you are experiencing.  Use it for God's intended purpose.  He has started a work in you.  His sanctifying process includes many growing pains.  Use your circumstances to see God from that perspective.  Find the humility of being at the mercy of an infinite Holy God.  Then give him the glory and praise He is worthy of.  When you get to that place you will stop wondering if God will move in your life and circumstances and realize He already has.

Thinking again.
