1 Chronicles

1 Chronicles 4

The Family of Judah
The Family of Sikmeon

1 Chronicles 4:1-23

Chapter 3 focussed on the detailed lineage of David. Chapter 4 picks back up the tribe of Judah; the first few verses are a recap. In verse four we see the phrase "father of"; these should be seen as the founder of a town or territory.

Jabez was more honorable. This word literally means 'weighty'. This seems to indicate Jabez was a large baby causing his mother considerable pain at birth. Yet, Jabez also grew up to call on the name of the Lord. He offered his honorable (weighty) prayer. The blessing of God would be the enlarging of his territory, the Lord's hand would be on him, kept from evil and not cause pain. God was honored in this prayer and thereby honored Jabez by granting such a prayer. This amounts to a prayer of setting himself before God, for God's use. The prayer of Jabez was his prayer. What's your prayer?
