2 Chronicles

2 Chronicles 23

Joash Crowned King of Judah
Death of Athaliah

2 Chronicles 23:1-11

Jehoida was the priest that helped to hide the young Joash. It had to be a particularly scary time to be a priest. Athaliah had no conscience of killing her family, she certainly wouldn't hesitate to eliminate a priest of the a God she had no regard for. Jehoida resolved to move towards the enthronement of Joash. In summoning the captains and Levites from the cities around Judah, we see a common concern and united effort to return the throne to David's line and restore worship. Imagine the shock when Jehoida gathered these folks in the temple and announces the existence of David's descendant. Everyone was in agreement with Jehoida and made a covenant supporting him.

Jehoida had put the people and the plan in place to present the real king to his throne. He chose the Sabbath at shift change to have the maximum number of people present without raising suspicion. When the day came he was presented as king when he was 7 years old. The King was crowned, given the Testimony and anointed. This copy of the 'Testimony' was a copy of the law made by him from the law before the preiests as directed by Deuteronomy 17:18.

2 Chronicles 23:12-15

Athaliah came running when she heard this commotion. This had to be a particularly ugly scene. She saw the king, she heard and saw the support of the people and many men with weapons; she knew she was done. It probably fealt like treachery to her; everyone was agaisnt her. However she had set her self against God and God's people early on. She had gained power by treachery; its iron she experienced this as treachery as she losed the throne and her life. Jehoida protected the temple by taking her outside to kill her and her followers. Did anyone follow her? A queen with no followers was never a leader.

2 Chronicles 23:16-21

Jehoida egan to re-establish temple worship and operation as it had been established by David. The sacrifices were started as well as the singing and worship as set up by David. They began to purge the land of Baal worship and the idols. The priest of Baal was killed on the altar of Baal.
